Instituted in 1911 to award lifesaving actions. The guardian must have been in life-threatening danger to recieve the medal. In 1928 the medal was replaced with a medal to wear (with ribbon). On the observe the face of Andrew Carnegie facing left, on the reverse a man holding a victim fighting a dragon. Below normally the name and date of life saving action is engraved.

The medal on the left was awarded to policeman H. Rappard for lifesaving in Scheveningen on 25th of july 1958.
