Between December 1996 and December 2004, NATO led an international Stabilisation Force (SFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, helping to maintain a secure environment and facilitating the country's reconstruction in the wake of the 1992-1995 war. In the light of the improved security situation in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region, the Alliance brought SFOR to a conclusion in December 2004.

The Netherlands participated with over 27.000 military in the years 1995-2004 in IFOR and SFOR.

For this mission military also recieved the Commemorative medal Multinational Peace Operations Yougoslavia (until 2001) or the Commemorative medal for Peace Operations with clasp SFOR (2001-2004)
